Thoughts of suicide

Lars Kessing, professor of psychiatry

Here at DepNet, you can among other things read about your feelings when you are depressed. These feelings can be difficult to live with, but you can make them easier to live with and you can even make the negative thoughts and feelings disappear altogether.

There are many people who are ready to help you. That includes us here at DepNet. The aim of writing about suicide is to help you understand that the negative feelings are an illness. You can recover, so there is no reason to let them destroy your life.

Unfortunately, it is not unusual for people to think about taking their own life. But let these thoughts lead you to someone who can help you. We urge you to do this.

Seek help!

If you are suffering from depression and having suicidal thoughts, you should seek professional help:

  • Talk to your doctor
  • Talk to your psychiatrist
  • Go to a psychiatric casualty department
  • Call the emergency doctor

See the references for acute help here.

Does it help?

If you are thinking a lot about suicide, it will feel a relief to be admitted to a psychiatric ward. On a psychiatric ward, there will be people who will look after you and care about you. You will receive the right treatment for you there.

When the depression eases, everything will appear different. Your thoughts of committing suicide will disappear completely, and you will be surprised at how you could ever have had such thoughts. If your thoughts sometime touch on suicide, we advise you to talk to your doctor or psychiatrist about these thoughts.
